Bridge deck repairs
Bridge expansion joints are prone to a number of issues caused by pounding load conditions and various environmental factors. The necessary repair and maintenance varies by joint type. For strip-seal or gland-type joints, pressure-washing is essential. For steel sliding joints, loose or damaged portions may need to be cut out or trimmed down.
deck joint replacement
When there’s no other solution, expansion joints need to be replaced in part or in whole. This can be a simple refilling of crumb rubber and liquid sealant in CF joints, or a full installation of new compression seals, or a partial replacement of elements in modular joints.
deck joint sealing
The addition of steel to a road that was paved without it. Typically done by sawing six 2 ½ inch “slots” on an already existing joint or crack in the roadway; jackhammering the area sawed to remove the old concrete to allow space for a new dowel bar inside the “slot”, elevating it off the bottom with a plastic chair, and then filling the slot with grout to create a load transfer point at the existing joint.
structural concrete
If extensive concrete deterioration moves beyond the level of simple cracks, structural repairs become necessary. After removing unsound concrete and sandblasting the area, new concrete is placed and cured in accordance with all safety protocols.
epoxy sealing
Cracks developing in the abutments, piers, or wingwalls can be dealt with through epoxy sealing. These pressure-injections act as structural adhesive, restoring the integrity of the material. The underlying cause of the cracking should always be established so that the deterioration does not reoccur.
